Breaking News:Rangers ace Cyriel Dessers addresses Ibrox exit speculation

UK

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has said he is “really happy” at Ibrox despite speculative reports linking him with a move away.

Having scored his first two goals of pre-season in the Gers’ 4-4 draw with Union Berlin on 27 July, the Gers forward said he was fully focused on the season ahead at Ibrox.

The Nigeria international netted 22 times in all competitions last season, but doubts over his ability to lead the line have resulted in speculation that he could make a move away [Daily Record, 24 July].

Speaking to the Daily Record’s Andy Newport (29 July), Dessers said: “I’m really happy at this club. I’ve said before, when I signed I was hoping to stay for a couple of years.

“For me there’s been a lot of writing and talking. Sometimes I come into the building and it’s like, ‘Oh you’re still here!’

“Does Ibrox feel like home? Definitely. And not just for me, for my fiancee as well. We feel at home in Glasgow, we feel good (and) we’re happy to be here.”

Rangers set to continue with Cyriel Dessers as first-choice No.9

Regardless of whether Philippe Clement does want an upgrade in the centre-forward position this summer, the lack of transfer movement has left him with few options but to put his faith in Dessers.

The Gers’ season opener against Hearts takes place on 3 August, giving the Belgian less than a week to integrate any new signings who arrive between now and the upcoming Saturday.

As such, Dessers looks all-but certain to be spearheading the attack of a Light Blues side which is still set to look wildly different to the one which ended last season with their tails between their legs.

Completing a statement signing like Lawrence Shankland before the transfer window shuts would put title rivals Celtic on notice [David Edgar, 26 July], but Dessers might need to be sold in order to raise funds for such a move.

But with only a returning-from-injury Danilo and the untested Hamza Igamane as possible alternatives up front, it seems unlikely that we’ll see anyone but Dessers lead the line at Tynecastle this Saturday.
