BREAKING NEWS:Martin O’Neill is set to replace Brendan Rodgers as new head coach…
Brendan Rodgers returning to Celtic for a second spell didn’t really sit that well with a lot of fans at the time.
After Celtic lost Ange Postecoglou to Spurs, the board had to move quickly to fill that void and Rodgers was the only name on the list.
But it was a name that not many Celtic fans thought that they would see back at the club ever again after the way Rodgers left Paradise for the English Premier League.
However, the majority of Celtic fans have gotten past that anger and are now enjoying some of the best football they have seen at the club since the Postecoglou days.
Now 18 months into his current deal, Rodgers is on the verge of qualifying from the Champions League group stage and has the possibility of winning another treble at the club.
And when asked how he thought the current Celtic manager was doing right now, Martin O’Neill wasted no time in delivering his big verdict on Rodgers’ second spell in Paradise.
Martin O’Neill says Brendan Rodgers has answered his Celtic critics
O’Neill told The Go Radio Football Show, “Oh, he’s doing splendidly, really. And yes he had a lot to overcome. There’s no doubt about that.
“And I think he would have been anxious about those fans who felt that he left Leicester in the manner in which they think he left. That’s the point. And so coming back, I think there were people who he had to win over.
“And finally, you win people over by performances, by results, and in the manner in which they’re playing now, particularly the game against Leipzig, which was terrific. And that’s as good a performance as in Europe and for quite some considerable time.
“After I left the football club, Gordon [Strachan] came in and I think Gordon did really, really well at the football club, really well indeed.
“So Brendan’s coming in at a time when he had to keep Celtic strong because Ange Postecoglou had done really well as well too. Celtic have been strong now for quite some considerable time. But I think it was the manner of their victory against Leipzig, which was brilliant.
“I was covering the Champions League game that night in Dublin. We were doing the Liverpool-Leverkusen game and Shay Given was beside me as one of the pundits.
