There is never a good time to lose your captain. Especially not for the sort of fee Rangers ended up paying.
But thanks to an agreement they made back in 2023, one of Philippe Clement’s nine summer signings ended up at Ibrox for a mere fraction of his true market value.
FC Twente agreed that Robin Propper would be allowed to leave for a cut-price fee of just £1.5 million, as reward for having denied the defender a move to ‘top foreign club’ around 12 months previously.
That is what director Arnold Bruggink said when Propper completed his move to the Scottish Premiership runners’ up 48 hours before Rangers‘ 0-0 opening day draw away to Hearts.
And you have to feel for Joseph Oosting.
Having taken FC Twente to a third place finish last season while securing their spot in the Champions League qualifiers, all of Oosting’s good work was undone to an extent when his skipper departed on the eve of the new campaign.

Though while Oosting is obviously disappointed to be denied Propper’s services, the coach does feel a pang of pride after seeing a player who developed so much on his watch securing a move to one of the most historic and best-supported clubs on the continent.
“You wish (for) a player like that to have a transfer like that,” Oosting tells 1Enschede, feeling that Twente simply became a victim of their own success.
“This is also the result of the fact that you are successful. We have to take into account that these players grow and then leave.”
The late-blooming Propper played nearly 100 Eredivisie games in three years at the Stadion Galgenwaard.
A massive presence in both penalty areas – he scored 11 times for the club while drawing comparisons with both Stefan de Vrij and Virgil van Dijk due to his fine passing range – Propper brings physicality, technical qualities and no shortage of experience to the Ibrox dressing room.
