Breaking News:James Tavernier blows minds at Rangers as crucial transfer verdict emerges

James Tavernier will stay at Rangers and it will prove to be a “crucial” decision for the club, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Ibrox defender believes the Light Blues need the captain’s experience and his incredible numbers after losing significant experience already this summer.

Vice-captain Connor Goldson was sold to Aris Limassol, while the trio of Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic and John Lundstram left on a free transfer.

Tavernier also appeared close to an exit to Trabzonspor after the Turkish side made multiple transfer bids [Rangers Review, 23 July], but he currently remains in place in Glasgow.

Hutton said, via PLZ Soccer (10 August): “James Tavernier, his numbers and that are there for everybody to see, it’s quite incredible. I think I scored about five goals in my career and he’s got 100-plus for Rangers, which blows my mind.

“When we’re speaking about the type of player that’s left with experience I think it’s crucial that he did stay because he gives you so much within games, big moments, big European nights, semi-finals, he’s always there to score a goal or set up a goal.

“So I think it was important, he’s the club captain, that he did stay. He’s into his 10th year as well.”

Rangers captain set to stay under Philippe Clement

Philippe Clement’s Ibrox clear-out has seemingly stalled part-way through with various other exit-bound players also still at the club.

He has confirmed that Todd Cantwell is still training separately after asking to leave, and Ianis Hagi is turning out for the B Team ahead of an expected departure, with a deal thought to be lined up for him to join Fiorentina [Digi Sport, 26 July].

A new approach has been made for the perennially exit-linked Ridvan Yilmaz [Krampon Sports, 9 August] but interest in Cyriel Dessers hasn’t materialised into bids [Chris Jack, 7 August].

There is certainly an argument that having seen so many senior players depart makes it risky to let the skipper go as well, while it is going to be a major task to replace his goals and assists whenever he does leave either way.
