Breaking News:Ferguson hails Rangers star’s ‘achievement’ as he highlights impressive stat

Say what you want about one of the more divisive players in Rangers’ recent history, his record makes for pretty impressive reading.

For all the esteem in which Alfredo Morelos was held in at Ibrox, the firebrand Colombian broke the 20-goal barrier in only two of his six seasons in Scottish football.

In his last four Premiership campaigns, meanwhile, Morelos notched only 12, 12, 11 and then 11 again.

So while Cyriel Dessers has more misses in his collection than M Night Shyamalan’s filmography, even the striker’s biggest critic would have to accept that a return of 22 goals across his debut season as a Rangers player is not to be sniffed at.

Dessers also netted 16 times in the league. Only set-piece specialist James Tavernier, Celtic star Matt O’Riley, and Hearts’ perennially Ibrox-linked talisman Lawrence Shankland managed more.

Yes, Dessers squandered a few presentable openings in last week’s stalemate at Tynecastle. But, as the old saying goes, if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.

The £4.5 million signing from Cremonese was rewarded for his willingness to continue getting himself in the right positions with a heroic 94th minute equaliser in the 1-1 Champions League qualifying draw with Dynamo Kiev in midweek.

Barry Ferguson, the legendary Rangers captain, feels that Philippe Clement would still benefit from the addition of a new number nine.

But he cannot shake the warmth he feels towards a man who’s quality and consistency might be in question, but his work-rate and determination is certainly not.

“No one deserves a break more than Cyriel Dessers,” Ferguson tells the Daily Record.

“I was absolutely delighted for the big man when he popped up with that equaliser in injury time because, for the last year, he’s had folk queuing up to have a go over his finishing. I’ve felt for him because some of the stick has been savage and, to be brutally honest, way over the top as well.
