Everton once again failed to claim their first points of the season as they were hammered 4-0 away to spurs this afternoon. Following a 3-0 defeat to Brighton in their first game of the season last week, the Toffees have had a brutal start to the season.
For the second week in a row, Irish fans will have noticed that centre-half Jake O’Brien was an unused sub. While Sean Dyche’s side continue to have a torrid time, the Irishman has yet to make his Premier League debut following his big money move form Lyon this summer.
Having been involved in relegation battles for the last number of seasons, it was hoped that the Merseyside club could avoid being dragged into a similar scrap this time around. While it is far too early if that will be the case, the signs during the opening couple of weekends are not promising.
Today’s game was all but over as a contest when Heung-Min Son put spurs 2-0 in front in the 25th minute following a huge error from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Jake O’Brien’s absent from Everton team once again
The absence of Jake O’Brien in today’s lineup was particularly puzzling, with Everton having forked out €20million to bring the Irishman to the club in recent weeks. The decision to play 31 year-old Michael Keane ahead of him was an odd call to say the least.
Sean Dyche will have plenty to ponder after another poor performance from his side and with a huge clash at home to Bournemouth next week, they will need to get their first points of the new season on the board.
The snub of O’Brien once again will no doubt frustrate Everton fans as they still search for their first points of the season.
The Irishman impressed during his brief appearances in pre-season and his arrival had excited the Goodison Park faithful. Hopefully he will get the opportunity to show what he can do at the club sooner rather than later.
