  • It’s all gone quiet since Rangers signed Robin Propper as Rangers look to give Philippe Clement the sort of tools to mount any sort of title challenge this season.

The manager cut a frustrated figure after losing the Champions League qualifying round clash with Dynamo Kyiv and his task became a whole lot harder with the elimination and relegation to the Europa League.

New players are needed; however, the status quo remains as Rangers struggle to get fringe players and those on big wages who aren’t contributing out the door.

As time ticks by, Rangers will miss out on potential targets like Bayer Leverkusen powerhouse Gustavo Puerta who looks like he has made a decision on his future.

Rangers set to miss out on Gustavo Puerta

Linked with a move to Ibrox, the Colombian youth international has a promising future and featured regularly in his side’s invincible Bundesliga title win.

According to respected Belgian journalist Sacha Tovolieri, amid connections to Anderlecht, Brondby and Rangers, Glasgow doesn’t look like being his next destination:

“Gustavo Puerta won’t join Anderlecht. Colombian central midfielder’s now edging close to a loan deal in Brondby… Told this deal’s close with Danish club now. Wait & See.”

There have been other reports that a possible permanent deal is also on the table with a fee in the region of £3-4m including add-ons – hardly breaking the bank.

It had been hoped that Rangers relationship with Puerta’s agents could smooth negotiations after a TransferRoom conference saw Nils Koppen seal the signing of Oscar Cortes.

Could Puerta miss lead to another Latin American target?

Cortes’ agent Tomas Sarmiento explained how more players from Latin America could come to Rangers and why the winger might not be the last to arrive from across the Atlantic:

“I’d say a lot of people are cautious about introducing Latin American players to the European market as they’ve not been tested at what you would consider to be the higher echelon.

“So what these doors let us do is actually talk to those decision makers and let us get into detail about what those doubts might be and how we can clear them up.

“Through TransferRoom we had the opportunity to create exchanges, meetings and all of this.

“We came to a good deal and Oscar Cortes will continue at Rangers. It is a club that has helped him greatly to develop and adapt in Europe.

“I think he’s on a good path and ideally, with all the help that TransferRoom provided, we’ll continue our relationship, opening paths to new markets.”

Rangers have not only been linked with players from around the globe, but they have also signed several from markets outside of the usual sources.

With money tight, Koppen has to be creative and a loan deal for Puerta would have seen the squad strengthened with title winning and top league experience without breaking the bank.

Hopefully, Sarmiento has another player or two that he could send Rangers way.
