Latest Nottingham Forest news as Reds boss Nuno Espirito Santo faces keeper dilemma for Premier League season

Goalkeeper Matz Sels knows he has a fight on his hands to retain the No 1 spot for Nottingham Forest this season.

The Belgian established himself as first-choice between the posts in the second half of last term after signing for the Reds in the January transfer window. But there is no guarantee he will keep his place in the team for the 2024/25 campaign.

Sels now faces competition from Carlos Miguel after the Brazilian joined from Corinthians earlier this month. As it stands, it seems there has been no indication from head coach Nuno Espirito Santo about who will be in the starting line-up when the Premier League action begins in less than three weeks’ time.

Asked who will be number one, Sels told the BBC: “I don’t know. I did my job last season. The coach will always decide. Matt Turner, Miguel, me, there is good competition between us and in the end it is important to have competition between keepers.

“We are good with each other and, most important, it is always (about) the team and the coach will decide. But I did my job last season so we will see what happens this season.”

Sels was recruited in January after summer signings Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos had failed to convince. The latter has already departed this summer and there is a question mark over Turner’s future.

The American has been pushed further down the pecking order with the arrival of Miguel. It is unlikely he will see much game time Trentside this season and he is said to have interest from the MLS.

If Turner does leave, Forest’s goalkeeping reshuffle could see them bring in another stopper before the window closes to ensure they have three senior options on the books.
