The situation with Ianis Hagi at Rangers is certainly a bid of a head scratcher.

The Romanian international playmaker, 25, was once amongst the brightest talents at the club but saw his Ibrox career derailed by a serious knee injury at the beginning of 2022.

Handed a new contract a year later, there were hopes Ianis Hagi could resurrect his career in Glasgow with the playmaker currently tied to Rangers until 2026.

But after a disastrous loan spell in La Liga last season, Hagi finds himself training with the Rangers B team and fans are asking why he’s not involved with the first-team.

This comes after Hagi popped up with a hat-trick in a recent Rangers B clash with Derby County.

Leading broadcaster Sky Sports appears to have the answer.

Hagi ‘keen’ on Rangers stay

According to Sky Sports, there’s a financial reason why Ianis Hagi has not been involved with the Rangers first team this season.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

Whilst it’s claimed that Hagi is ‘keen’ on staying at Rangers, Philippe Clement has reportedly told the midfielder he is not part of his plans.

The situation is further complicated by Hagi having a wage increase clause in his contract which will see his salary increase should he continue to play competitive matches for the club.

Whilst it’s not suggested that this is the crux of the issue with Ianis Hagi at Rangers, Sky Sports believe it is a factor.

The claims rather contradict those of Ianis Hagi himself, who spoke candidly about his future ahead of Euro 2024 with Romania.

The midfielder had claimed that his agents were instructed to find him the right opportunity but it appears a move has not been forthcoming so far this summer.

“My focus is on the Euros,” said Hagi back in June. “I had talks with my agents and the pressure is on them.

“They know what I want for my future, it’s a pretty important summer for me from all points of view. I told them before going to the national team what I wanted.

“I expect them to work as well as possible, to find the right team and the right manager for me.

“I can’t say if I’ll be at Rangers or somewhere else. My future depends on my agents.”

Clement contradiction

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has also been asked about the future of Ianis Hagi recently.

Referencing those talks earlier in the summer, the Belgian boss has explained that there was a mutual agreement with Hagi’s side earlier in the summer.

Speaking ahead of the Champions League QR3 first leg with Dynamo Kiev, Clement was clear that everyone was on the same page regarding the future of Ianis Hagi at Rangers.

“Is he part of my plans? No, we had clear talks before the pre-season with his agents about that,” said Clement.

“We need to look, like I said, at a lot of things in the club about wages, how many you can have in a position with the budget we have and to get the budget to get transfers.

“So, it was really clear towards him that the idea was to sell him. That is what we wanted also so that is the clear situation.”

Clement has also refused to be drawn on reports that Rangers are willing to let Ianis Hagi leave on a free to get the Romanian’s salary off the wage bill.

Reports earlier in the summer had suggested Hagi had agreed a deal with former club Fiorentina but there is yet to be any serious movement in that regard.
