Barry Ferguson shares John Souttar injury admission ahead of Celtic v Rangers
Barry Ferguson does not believe John Souttar will be fit for Celtic versus Rangers at Hampden Park on Sunday.
The centre-back was replaced during the first half of the Gers’ impressive 1-1 draw with Tottenham in the Europa League, with Leon Balogun entering the fray alongside Robin Propper.
He is now a doubt to face their Old Firm rivals in the Scottish League Cup final on 15 December, giving Philippe Clement a huge predicament before the important final.
Speaking via the Go Radio Football Show [13 December], Ferguson said: “John Souttar has been able to get a run of games consistently, and his levels have gone up.
“But to me, it looks as though he’s going to be very doubtful. My favourite centre-back partnership would be Souttar and Balogun.”
John Souttar to miss Rangers’ League Cup final clash v Celtic?
Souttar’s absence would be a crushing blow ahead of the Scottish League Cup final, especially as the Gers are set to meet the Hoops after such a good run of form in all competitions.
The Light Blues are unbeaten in nine matches across the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League, bypassing the likes of Nice and Spurs as well as thrashing Kilmarnock 6-0 at Ibrox.
There seems to be an air of positivity floating around Ibrox recently, with fans lifting some of the pressure off Clement, but that same pressure is bound to be straight back on when facing Celtic.
Supporters will be expecting the manager to achieve something he has yet to do since arriving in Scotland – get one over on Brendan Rodgers and his side.
With the Scottish League Cup on the line, the Gers must do everything to keep that trophy but that feat will be made much harder if Souttar is unavailable for the clash at Hampden Park.
