Ally McCoist responds to what Jeff Stelling said about Rangers today live on air
Ally McCoist was in full agreement with Jeff Stelling that Rangers fans would be encouraged despite their Scottish League Cup final defeat to Celtic.
The Gers played out a 3-3 draw in regular time with Celtic on 15 December before a 5-4 penalty shootout loss confirmed their defeat at the final hurdle.
Whether the defeat ramps up the pressure on Philippe Clement is yet to be seen but his future will be in the spotlight at Ibrox.
Speaking live on talkSPORT at the very start of the show (16 December, 6:07 am) Stelling claimed that Rangers fans will be confident the gap is closing, with McCoist agreeing.
“Absolutely, Jeff. I mean, clearly disappointed as you want to win the Old Firm game. That goes without saying,” McCoist explained.
But the level of improvement in the last couple of games, the Spurs game and the game yesterday, yes, pretty evident. So, as disappointed as they’ll be, and they will be, I’m very disappointed in myself. No, I’ve got to say, the upturn in form in the last two games, hopefully, is really encouraging.”
Rangers play well but get nothing to show for it
The tale of the season under Clement during the early stages was very much of a case of a series of lacklustre performances with the occasional result going their way.
However, the Belgian has managed to rejuvenate his side and got them back to playing some good stuff and they were perhaps unfortunate to be on the wrong end of the game at Hampden Park.
Against Celtic, they had chances to win the game and failed to take them but the general performance was certainly there.
