SHOCKING NEWS:Angelos Postecoglou confirmed the suspension of two key players few minutes ago
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Tottenham’s reported decision to scrap post-season international games will have a “longer knock-on effect”.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested international games may have to be sacrificed altogether for the wellbeing of the players.
The Telegraph revealed a new twist last week (26 September), with the newspaper claiming Tottenham will not embark on another money-spinning post-season tour next summer.
Spurs travelled to Australia to take on Newcastle just days after the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
Tottenham increased their commercial revenue from £183.5million to £227.7million in their reports for the 2022-23 season.
Tottenham twist will have ‘longer knock-on effect’, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “These games are key areas for developing the international fanbases.
“It allows them to meet and interact with the squad, and you can then engender that into loyalty for the whole season.
“It will have a longer knock-on effect.
“It’s a big question, a big issue – but it’s balanced out by the player burnout issue.
“We’re already seeing a lot of injuries.
“Clubs have got to think about their pre-season preparations and how they can get their squads prepared for the competitive games – because that’s where the real money is.”
