BRENDAN RODGERS will take charge of Celtic for the 49th time in European competition against Slovan Bratislava at Parkhead this evening.
Tony Hamilton & Clare Sweeney, Road to Seville interview
The Hoops boss hopes to kick off the new-look Champions League with three points against the Slovaks with other matches to follow against Borussia Dortmund (A), Atalanta (A), RB Leipzig (H), Club Brugge (H), Dinamo Zagreb (A) and Young Boys (H).
The final encounter is scheduled for January 29 next year when the Hoops travel to the Midlands to take on Aston Villa.
THE THINKER…Brendan Rodgers is pensive on the touchline.
There was disappointment last time around when Rodgers saw his team finish bottom of their group with just one win out of six. The Hoops lost home and away to Lazio, drew 2-2 with Atletico Madrid in Glasgow before collapsing to a 6-0 loss in the Spanish capital with the side considerably weakened by an early red card for Daizen Maeda.
It had been the same unfortunate tale when the ball got rolling in the campaign in Rotterdam where Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Holm, two of the club’s summer recruits, dismissed in the 2-0 loss to Feyenoord.
Swedish defender Lagerbielke, currently on loan at FC Twente, went from zero to hero when he headed in a late winner against the Dutch club in the return.
Only pride was at stake in last term’s victory over the Eredivisie giants. Tonight, it’s all about points.
Rodgers has guided the Celtic to 17 wins and nine draws while losing 22 of his previous 48 outings in charge.
