James McFadden believes Emmanuel Adegboyega’s challenge on Connor Barron did not warrant a red card during Rangers’ 1-0 win over Dundee United on Sunday (15 September).
The 20-year-old centre-back was the subject of a VAR check at Tannadice following a strong foul on the Gers midfielder, with referee Don Robertson cautioning him for the incident.
While contact higher up for Barron could have spelt “big trouble”, McFadden is adamant the referee made the correct decision not to send Adegboyega off in the first half.
Speaking live via Sky Sports on Sunday (15 September, 12:57pm), he said: “I’m not surprised, with the speed he goes in at. I don’t think it’ll be a red card because he catches him on the foot.
“If he catches him any higher, on the ankle, it’s more than likely a red card. In any case, it’s not a good tackle at all. If that’s higher, he’s in big trouble, as is Connor Barron because there’s a lot of force behind that. But the contact is on the top of the foot.”

Adegboyega’s challenge on Barron was certainly borderline, and the player would have had little defence should VAR have turned the yellow card into a red.
His manager, Jim Goodwin, was clearly worried about his defender after the challenge, having hooked him at half-time and replacing him with Vicko Sevelj.
There has already been a lot of debate surrounding the controversial decision, though the most important point was that Barron was not hurt and managed to continue against the Tangerines.
