Breaking News:Keith Jackson slams Philippe Clement for ‘absolutely mental’ Rangers decision

Keith Jackson believes Philippe Clement’s decision to not include Ianis Hagi with the Rangers first team is “absolutely mental”.

After spending last season away on loan in La Liga, Hagi has since reiterated his desire to stay at Ibrox for the 2024/25 season and has insisted that he will fight for his place.

But Clement has made it clear that he does not see Hagi as part of his plans and rumours have persisted since the summer that he will be sold.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (12 September) Jackson slammed Clement’s decision to send Hagi to the B team after Scott McDermott questioned how Rangers could demand any fee for the midfielder.

“How can Rangers demand any sort of fee for a guy that the manager has publicly claimed that he won’t play in the first team again,” McDermott said.

“Rangers have literally decreased his value day by day throughout the whole summer because of everything they’ve done.

“If Rangers want any kind of fee for him, the guy that they should be thanking is the Romania manager because he’s the only guy that’s keeping Hagi’s value up

To which Jackson replied: “That ship has sailed Scott, and again, typical Rangers, they’ve got a guy, the last man standing from the SPFL at the Euros and he’s playing well.

“He’s attracting a bit of interest and he’s playing in a decent Romania side and the first thing Rangers do is bring him back and tell him ‘you’re training with the kids’, honestly it is absolutely mental.”

Rangers need to give Ianis Hagi a chance in the first-team

Hagi was arguably one of the most creative outlets in the Romania national team.

However, the vast majority of the summer transfer window was spent by the Gers trying to offload the 25-year-old but when that failed to come to fruition, Clement stated that Hagi would never play for his first team again.

With Todd Cantwell having been sold, there are those who think that Hagi should be given another opportunity to show his worth especially amid the context of a poor start to the campaign.

Tom Lawrence has had a fairly solid season so far but Hagi presents another creative option and it does seem short-sighted for him to be completely ostracised from the first team.
