JUST-IN;Mateo Joseph rejected Daniel Farke terms and conditions insisted leaving due to
Mateo Joseph’s time in the starting XI could be at risk despite some bright performances for Leeds United so far this season.
Although he was not handed a single Championship start by Daniel Farke last term, the 20-year-old Spaniard has started every game in the 2024/25 campaign.
Joseph has done well to seize that opportunity with both hands, grabbing two assists in the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday before finding the back of the net against Hull before the international break.
The youngster has carried that form over to the Spain Under-21s, scoring the winner in a 2-1 win over Scotland but was then benched against Hungary.
Joseph has largely been given the opportunity due to Patrick Bamford’s injury, which has seen him sidelined for the last two matches, but Farke’s latest update suggests his return is not too far away.
Speaking in his press conference on Thursday (12 September), Farke said: “Patrick has been back involved in team training since Tuesday.
“We will still be careful with him, he’s not ready to play 90 minutes. It’s good he’s back in training. He will be important during the season.”
Could Patrick Bamford steal back the Leeds United striker spot?
While the comments suggest that Bamford will not be starting against Burnley on Saturday 14 September, his return is not a million miles away.
Despite a clamour for Joseph to be given a real opportunity last season, Farke continued to stick with the 31-year-old due to his small purple patch in the league.
Of course, Bamford has been in this position before, fighting for promotion to the Premier League, and that experience will be important if the Whites are to achieve that exact feat this season.
However, with his proneness to injury and lack of availability so far, mixed with Joseph’s fine displays in the final third, fans will be sent crazy if Farke decides to switch the pair upon his return to full fitness.
Given his choices in the final third last season, though, it does not seem like an impossible eventuality.
