Rangers could sign Lawrence Shankland or Bojan Miovski after Cyriel Dessers developments
Cyriel Dessers generating transfer interest at Rangers shows that a move to sign Lawrence Shankland provides value for money at Ibrox, says Derek Ferguson.
The Gers’ Nigerian is wanted across Europe [Chris Jack, 3 July] after a campaign where he scored 22 but missed a lot of chances and frustrated observers at times.
At 29 he is older than the Hearts star who managed 31 strikes for Steven Naismith’s side last term suggesting the Scot, 28, would retain even more sell-on value if required should the Light Blues try to sign him.
Rangers reportedly like Shankland and Aberdeen ace Bojan Miovski but are concerned about the prices of both according to the Scottish Daily Mail on 1 July.
But Ferguson feels that if Dessers and even Dutch flop Sam Lammers have a market after scoring the amounts they did last term it shows a premier source of goals like Shankland is a worthwhile investment this summer.
“Of course, and Miovski at Aberdeen,” he said, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News.
“Dessers, he was woeful for the first three months of the season but when the manager came in there was an improvement.
“Clubs will look at his record in terms of how many goals he’s banged in, 22 goals, so that will get people talking about him.
“Again, he’s one that I think is quite keen to pursue his career further afield, another one who would opt to get out.
“He came in for a lot of criticism, and quite rightly so, but when you’ve scored 22 goals I think there might be a few takers out there. I think there will be with Lammers but again it’s going to come down to the board won’t want to lose any money.
“But the board sanctioned [Michael] Beale to come in, gave him a few bob to go and spend, they trusted him and it just never worked. It’s been a mess, and I feel for the manager that’s having to pick up this mess and turn things around.
“Lammers, Dessers, are they worth the money they were bought for? I don’t think so. So it’s going to be really difficult to get that money back for them.”
Hearts and Aberdeen stars value for money as Rangers ace wanted
Squabbling with Aberdeen over Connor Barron may render North Macedonian Miovski out of reach but Philippe Clement has reportedly made a u-turn on a Shankland move and is now interested [Daily Record, 22 July].
Both would be expected to score more at Rangers than Dessers (22) who has an asking price of £4.2million [Tutto Mercato Web, 9 July], or Lammers (two in Scotland and 11 on loan with FC Utrecht) who could now move to FC Twente for a similar amount [Andrea Losapio, 24 July].
So if the Light Blues are able to recoup anything like those fees for last year’s signings they could surely justify splashing out on the Hearts captain and could still sell him on in future.
