SHOCKING NEWS;Rangers confirm the return approval of former player Derek Ferguson
Derek Ferguson insists Rangers are right to open talks with John Souttar over a new contract.
It’s understood Gers chiefs are locked in discussions with Souttar’s representatives over an extension to his current deal, which runs out in 2026. The Scotland stopper has become a mainstay in Philippe Clement’s backline and the Ibrox boss is keen to tie him down for the long-term.
And ex-Light Blues hero Fergie believes the move makes total sense after watching a stream of big-money assets like Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and John Lundstram walk out the door for nothing in recent years – a problem Clement has vowed to fix.
He told Ibrox News: “The reason is we’ve made so many mistakes in the past with letting players run their contract down. Do you know something? I don’t think John Souttar was one of the big earners so it makes sense if you can get another year or two onto his contract. I don’t think it’ll be an increase in his wages so I think it’s probably one of the easier deals to be done.
“John obviously enjoys where he is, he’s at a big club. We’ve made so many mistakes in the past in just letting the boys run their contracts out so this is the start of people getting their heads on and going about their business and doing things right. It’s common sense, that’s all it is.”
