Celtic have millions in the bank but have hardly spent a dime this summer.

And while Brendan Rodgers wants new signings in ASAP, the Hoops boss has also been casting an eye over a mixture of youth and fringe players during pre-season. The Northern Irishman has handed out a generous amount of game time to some of the club’s up-and-coming academy prospects and it’s fair to say a few have certainly caught the eye.

Some senior players have also struggled to get their Parkhead careers up and running but have impressed in recent friendlies. Here, Football Scotland assesses five talents who could may have given their manager some food for thought ahead of the new campaign.

Kwon Hyeok-kyu

The South Korean has looked the part for Celtic this summer after a beneficial loan stint at St Mirren. A similar type of player to Nir Bitton, Kwon has oozed confidence in the middle of the park and has been neat and tidy with the ball. He hasn’t been afraid to put a foot in either and the Hoops could do with a bit of steel in midfield. Typically a defensive player, Kwon showed a different side to his game against Man City by beating the offside trap to tee up Luis Palma’s winner. Could have a part to play this season, although faces major competition for a place on the bench never mind a starting spot.

Francis Turley

The Northern Ireland youth international is perhaps the definition of a surprise package. Turley, 18, opened his account for the first-team by scoring in last week’s ten-goal thriller with Queen’s Park. And his performance certainly caught the eye of Rodgers, who waxed lyrical over the teenage midfielder. He said: “I’ve only really seen him the last few days and you can see he is a football player.
