JUST IN:The James Forrest Celtic contract situation that has gone under the radar
Celtic are in startling form and don’t look in the mood to stop as they head into the international break full of optimism for the campaign.
Four straight league victories and a cup triumph over Hibernian have whet the appetite of supporters for more from the squad, who look to have bought into Brendan Rodgers’ second-season vision without hesitation.
Greg Taylor has been particularly impressive during this run, earning praise from Chris Sutton for his role in the 3-0 derby demolition against Rangers last weekend.
Now, in the last year of his deal, there is a growing clamour for the Scotland international to be rewarded for his performances, especially given that he will be free to speak to other clubs in January.
Despite his ongoing situation, there is another central Celtic figure who they may soon need to make a decision on.
James Forrest’s Celtic contract is running down
Believe it or not, James Forrest is into the last year of his Celtic contract, and the club could have a decision to make sooner rather than later on his future.
The iconic figure made his 500th appearance for the Bhoys against Rangers last Sunday, receiving a rapturous reception from the home support when he entered the field of play.
With 24 winners’ medals to his name, Forrest will surpass Bobby Lennox’s record total of 25 should Celtic manage to claim a double this term.
The Prestwick-born man is the second-most decorated player in the Hoops’ history and continues to lead from the front with his experience and footballing intelligence.
Scoring 109 goals and delivering 105 assists, the one-club man is still a regular starter for Celtic in the modern day, but it remains to be seen the type of role he could have going forward at 33 years of age.
Nevertheless, his presence in the squad is also an important factor in maintaining quotas for European squad registration rules. More importantly, his presence in the dressing room is vital and he can impart a wealth of wisdom onto younger talents looking to cement a pathway to senior stardom.
In many ways, Forrest embodies everything a Celtic player should be. You get the impression he isn’t done creating history yet, so it will be intriguing to see where his future lies over the net few months.
