Ally McCoist shares Philippe Clement sack verdict at Rangers as van Bronckhorst comparison made

Ally McCoist believes Philippe Clement will be feeling the sack pressure after Rangers suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Celtic on Sunday (1 September).

Clement’s side have experienced a disappointing start to the 2024/25 campaign, having been knocked out of Champions League qualifying and now finding themselves five points adrift of Celtic in the league.

The Gers have won just one of their last 12 meetings with the Hoops – a 3-0 win at Ibrox in May 2023 – and McCoist thinks this could derail the manager’s career whether the rest of the season is successful or not.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (2 September, 9:58am), he said: “You can beat Ross County 6-0, you can even go on a European run. We saw that Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who I believe should still be at the club, got to a European final and was dismissed.

“It was because the team across the city was doing better than him. That’s how simple it is with the Old Firm and Celtic. Ten Hag at Manchester United is a bit different. They looked elsewhere, couldn’t find anyone, and decided to show faith in him after a cup win.

“I couldn’t pick one to say that either is under more pressure than the other, but believe me, both of them are under pressure.”

Philippe Clement feeling the pressure at Rangers after Celtic defeat?

If Clement is not feeling hot under the collar after the Gers’ latest defeat at Celtic Park, he certainly should be, with fans wanting someone’s head.

One of the Belgian’s aims this season will, of course, be to pip his opposite number, Brendan Rodgers to the Scottish Premiership title, but that is difficult to do when they’re unable to beat the Hoops.

He has now faced Celtic on five occasions since being appointed in October, losing four times and drawing the other, which has already caused a lot of frustration at Ibrox.
