The 22-year-old spent last season at Swansea City but was restricted to just 16 appearances because of injury. He then linked up with Newcastle for their post-season tour of Australia and made further first-team appearances in friendlies against Yokohama F.Marinos at Stade Brestois last month.

However, with Ashby behind Tino Livramento, Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth in the right-back pecking order, Newcastle feel another loan spell is best for his development. He attracted interest from a handful of clubs but said he had his “head turned” by QPR.

“I think it’s been a long time coming really,” said Ashby. “It’s been a stressful week as they say but there was only one place I wanted to come. I’m really excited for what is ahead. I’m ready.

“The people I spoke to and the chats that we had, straight away my head turned. I’m an attacking full-back so the style of football really suits me.

“A big thing coming on loan is the style of football. You want to improve, get better and help the team. The set up we have here, I can definitely improve my game and contribute for the team.

“Now I’m here and seen everything, my head is fully turned to QPR and getting started.”

The Magpies signed Ashby from West Ham United for a reported £3million just over 18 months ago. He was unveiled alongside Anthony Gordon at St James’ Park but unlike Gordon, Ashby is still awaiting his competitive debut.

Newcastle United are set to net an estimated £1.2million from Ivan Toney’s move to Al-Ahli.

A meteoric rise in recent years has seen the 28-year-old develop into one of the Premier League’s best strikers. Now an England international who starred at Euro 2024, Toney’s big break in English football came at the Magpies.
