Celtic manager is cleared to pursue a significant transfer target…
Movement at Celtic is expected in both directions today and Tomoki Iwata could become a late window departure amid interest in his services.
The Japanese midfielder has made 42 appearances for the Hoops since arriving from Yokohama F. Marinos, scoring once and recording three assists.
Despite being a competent squad option, Iwata has rarely been a preferred choice in the engine room when Celtic’s main options are fit and available.
Last season, he deputised well for Callum McGregor when the captain was absent and became a bit of an unsung hero in the Bhoys’ Scottish Premiership title victory.
Nevertheless, he has yet to feature in competitive action for Celtic in this campaign and could now secure a move to work with Brendan Rodgers’ former right-hand man Chris Davies.
Tomoki Iwata eyed by Birmingham City
According to The Scottish Sun, Birmingham City are in the frame to launch a late bid for Iwata. He is considering an exit from Celtic Park because he wants to play regular football.
The Blues, managed by former Hoops assistant Davies, are now keen to strike for the utility man as they build for a Sky Bet League One title challenge.
Iwata has reportedly attracted interest from clubs in the United Kingdom and around Europe after being left out of Celtic’s matchday squad for their last two fixtures.
At this point, it is unclear if the Bhoys would be open to a sale or loaning the midfielder out for the season. However, his time at the club looks to be coming to an end.
Intriguingly, this could also pave the way for another incoming in his position ahead of the cut-off point. Dundee captain Luke McCowan has been mentioned in circles as a figure Celtic could make a late play for on the market.
Lausanne-Sport’s Alvyn Sanches is also on the radar, but it remains to be seen who comes in if Iwata does head to the West Midlands. Celtic supporters will wish him the best of luck if he does depart.
