Ally McCoist can’t shake feeling over American takeover plot at Rangers as he concedes ‘something has to be done’
Record Sport understands Rangers chiefs were left bemused by reports a group of Stateside investors were considering ploughing millions into the Scottish Premiership side. The news in the London-based financial outlet CityAm came as a surprise to chairman John Bennett and the Ibrox directors. Dave King – the club’s largest single shareholder – also released a statement shooting down the claims he was considering a sale to the mystery group and showed support for Bennett.
Amid the swirls of an £150m plot from the mystery consortium, Ibrox icon McCoist was put on the spot over the takeover on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show by Alan Brazil. He responded: “Al, I don’t know but something’s got to be done. I couldn’t tell you whether it’s good or bad because I don’t know anything about the potential American investors, I don’t know their background.
“But however, the fact Dave King is insisting there is no truth whatsoever, then I’d have to take Dave’s word for it and say there’s obviously no interest – or maybe not so much ‘no interest’ but in this moment in time there doesn’t look like there’s a deal to be done.
“But Al, I tell you what, I mentioned last week in conversation with Jeff [Stelling] – I’m just deeply concerned with what’s happened. It really looks like there’s a good few needs to go out the door before they can spend any money to bring anyone in. So there are a lot of concerned Rangers fan out there – and I’m one of them.”
