Rangers to sign new central defender after Ben Davies exit as James Tavernier update emerges
Rangers will sign a replacement for Ben Davies in the final days of the transfer window, according to Chris Jack.
The Rangers Review journalist reported for the outlet’s website on 27 August that a central-defensive option is going to come in ahead of the deadline after the Gers defender completed his loan move to Birmingham City.
However, Philippe Clement will not sign a new left-back to cover for the injured Ridvan Yilmaz, and despite “huge speculation” around the future of James Tavernier a right-back is not expected to be signed either. Trabzonspor had a bid rejected for the captain.
Rangers captain to stay and Ridvan Yilmaz cover not coming
The Light Blues have been forced to move players out before signings could be made for weeks, so now Davies has headed back to England the club will have to move fast to fill that gap.
When Connor Goldson was sold to Aris Limassol during preseason Nils Koppen reacted fast to secure Robin Propper from FC Twente and something similar will be needed now.
If money were no object it seems certain that Clement would want cover for the injury-prone Yilmaz, both now and in future, but despite interest in former Manchester United man Brandon Williams on a free transfer it is not thought possible given the finances.
Tavernier has embarked on his 10th year as a Rangers player and will likely be a key man again in terms of goals and assists.
But after endless criticism of his defending it was widely expected he would move on this summer and hand the reigns to Dujon Sterling at right-back [Rangers Review, 17 June].
It may be another product of a tight budget at Ibrox that the club have been unable to agree deals for anything less than their required value, and it goes down as something of a surprise that the 32-year-old will remain.
But after losing a host of players on free transfers for two summers running it increases the risk that more will leave for nothing with every deal that isn’t done.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues could now be set to terminate multiple player’s contracts.
