Rangers make approach to seal Jackson Porozo transfer as demands emerge

Rangers have made an approach to sign Troyes centre-back Jackson Porozo, according to Football Scotland.

The online source reported on Saturday (24 August) that the Gers reached out to the French club, but their demands were unsuitable, leading to Philippe Clement’s side pursuing alternative targets.

It is understood that the Light Blues are in the market for a central defender to replace Ben Davies, who is set to join Birmingham City on loan before the transfer window shuts on 30 August [Daily Record].

Rangers to replace Ben Davies with new centre-back?

Given the Gers’ lack of stability at the back, it is no surprise to see them linked with more defenders before the transfer window slams shut, even with Davies set to leave on loan.

While Porozo looks to be an exciting prospect, having made eight international appearances for Ecuador at the age of 24, Clement needs to bring in a young figure who also has a lot of experience.

A lot of the current experience is held with the older generation of players within the squad, such as Leon Balogun and James Tavernier, who look to be slowing down in the back end of their careers.

With Davies on his way to the Championship, Clement will be left with Balogun, Robin Propper – who has had a mixed time in Scotland so far – John Souttar and Clinton Nsiala, who has been playing with the B team.

If Rangers are going to challenge their Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title, they must be tight-locked in defence and ruthless in attack. It remains to be seen if Clement can make either of those two things possible before the window closes.

The Belgian has just over five days to bring in his final signings, but the plethora of new faces could add to his problems at Ibrox, rather than take away from them.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement could be forced to reassess Rabbi Matondo’s transfer after what he did today.
