Philippe Clement revealed that the former Norwich midfielder had twice requested a transfer [Sky Sports, 25 July] before being left to train with the B Team.

Former Gers favourite Ferguson has credited the manager for originally leaving the door open for the Englishman to return, but can’t believe that Cantwell asked to leave without having a exit-route lined up.

It has been a month now since the development came to light and no bids have come forward, leaving the Light Blues in the “absolutely bizarre” situation of carrying the high-profile player in the reserves instead of playing him.

It’s baffling because I thought when he asked for a transfer I’m thinking, ‘Right, there must be two or three clubs sniffing about, ready to take him on board’.

“Here we are [a month] later, there’s absolutely no news, he’s training but he’s not even playing. It’s absolutely bizarre.

And credit to the manager this time he left the door open to him. He says, ‘Listen, have a think about it and come back to me because there’s a position in the squad where we would welcome you back’.
