Rangers fans turn against Todd Cantwell amid ‘absolutely incredible’ developments
Rangers fans have turned against wantaway Todd Cantwell in a stunning fall from grace at Ibrox, says Tam McManus.
Speaking on the The Football Show Live for PLZ Soccer on 23 August the former Hibs striker agreed with host Peter Martin’s amazement at how the attacking midfielder had gone from hero to zero at the club, and suggested his social media output had not matched up to his on-pitch contributions.
Cantwell looked a star under Michael Beale two seasons ago but Philippe Clement revealed during the summer he had twice asked to leave the club [Sky Sports, 25 July] and has now been training with the B Team for weeks.
Martin said (17m 45s): “His fall from grace has been absolutely incredible”.
McManus agreed: “Yeah it has. When he first came in he looked a really, really good player. He made an impression with the Rangers supporters straight away and he looked as if he was going to be a really, really good signing.
“I think a lot of his activity off the pitch in terms of social media and all that, the fans have turned against him.”
Philippe Clement never saw the best of Todd Cantwell at Rangers
Cantwell’s online persona always puts him at more risk of rubbing people up the wrong way, but Gers fans were prepared to accept that when he was performing on the pitch.
Clement may have to take an element of the responsibility himself for not getting the best out of a player who was arguably the best in the squad two seasons ago.
But it was clear from early on that the Belgian a different personality to Beale and that looks to have made a huge difference to Cantwell.
The 26-year-old clearly looks to be the sort of player who needs to feel comfortable and valued to play to their top level, and he is far from alone in that.
