Philippe Clement makes Sam Lammers move as Rangers boss struggles with Michael Beale flops

Derek Ferguson feels sorry for Philippe Clement because the Rangers boss is lumbered with too many players who have no future at the club.

Sam Lammers has been left in the B Team through the preseason as the club try to move him on [Rangers Review, 8 July] but exits back to the Eredivisie where he thrived on loan last term have failed thanks to his contract at Ibrox [AD Voetbal podcast, 15 July].

He is one of various players the club would like to move on, and one of a few who arrived last summer but failed.

Ferguson can’t help drawing parallels between the money that Michael Beale had to spend a year ago on “bang-average” players and the sell-to-buy difficulties Clement is now experiencing.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “I feel sorry for Clement because he’s got a number of players who, for me, I think it’s clear to see they’re not going to figure in his plans.

“So that’s why Sam Lammers is with the B Team.

“He also took a few players with him [who won’t figure] away for the couple of games [in the Netherlands] and he’s just got to work with what he’s got.

“If you think back to last season when Michael Beale was in charge and the amount of money he had at his disposal, they players that he brought in that he thought were going to do the job.

“It panned out that most of them were bang-average at best.

“So [Clement’s] got a hell of a job to do.”

Rangers could also sell Cyriel Dessers after a single season

Lammers proved to be anything but the player he was supposed to be at Ibrox but his eye-catching loan to FC Utrecht looked to have rescued that situation [Rangers Review, 29 May] so it is a major frustrating to have him languishing in the reserves.

Cyriel Dessers produced far more than the Dutchman last season but is equally available for a move, although he is another who has widespread interest [Rangers Review, 3 July] but a deal has yet to materialise.

Jose Cifuentes is a third signing from a year ago who did not settle as Beale’s haul ultimately got him sacked, and Clement could do with the budget that was available to the Englishman
