Breaking News:Cyriel Dessers: Rangers ‘close’ to striking £4.6m deal for hitman to replace Celtic hero

Rangers have been described as ‘close’ to striking a deal for Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers to leave the club.

The 29-year-old hitman is amongst the most enigmatic and polarising figures at Rangers over the last few seasons and continues to split fans with his performances.

Already hitting three goals this season, there are mixed hopes that the Ibrox striker can fire the club to glory this season and exit links have not been far away all summer long.

But as Rangers almost agree a fee for Cyriel Dessers with MLS club Atlanta United, the move has reportedly fallen apart after the big striker failed to agree personal terms.

Cyriel Dessers MLS interest

Cyriel Dessers has routinely linked with the Rangers exit door all summer long.

First, it was Greek side PAOK who were reportedly in discussions with Dessers’ representatives over a move to Thessaloniki.

But at the same time there was also reportedly intense interest from a number of places, with Heart & Hand quoting Dessers suitors in Italy, France, Spain and Saudi Arabia.

Now, Italian journalist Luca Benoni is claiming that US club Atlanta United had been ‘close’ to striking a $6m (£4.6m) deal with Rangers over the striker.

However the journalist suggests the move broke down over personal terms.

The reported £4.6m fee is close to the figure Rangers paid Italian club Cremonese for Dessers’ services last summer.

The report comes with Atlanta United looking for a replacement for former Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis.

The Greek hitman left the MLS side for Liga MX club Cruz Azul this summer in a deal said to be worth $10m (£7.6m).

Rangers striker ‘would like to stay’

The discussion around Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers will only intensify after these transfer links.

For many supporters, the jury remains out on the Nigerian international hitman who bears the responsibility of the ‘number nine’ jersey at Ibrox.

Last season, Cyriel suffered from the depth of injury issues at Ibrox with the forward expected to lead the line in the absences of Abdallah Sima, Danilo and Kemar Roofe.

This campaign, things could be slightly different with Danilo returning and Rangers building Hamza Igamane up for an introduction to the squad later in the year.

Despite the swirling exit talk, Cyriel Dessers has always been clear that he’d ‘like to stay’ in Glasgow and leave his mark on Rangers.

“I am very happy here, so I would like to stay,” Dessers told Dutch media back in July.
