Rangers need to use the money received from Glen Kamara’s sell-on in the right way before the transfer deadline, says Derek Ferguson.

The Light Blues received around £800,000 from Leeds United after the Finnish midfielder moved to Rennes earlier this summer [Football Scotland, 14 July], just a year after leaving Ibrox for Elland Road.

Fabrizio Romano reported on 13 July that a €10million fee had been agreed with the Ligue 1 club [£8.52m], after the Whites paid Rangers around £5m a year earlier [The Athletic, 16 July].

Ferguson believes that shows the Light Blues should have got more on the original deal, but it’s now more important to focus on incoming business where Philippe Clement has only managed to land two senior signings in – Vaclav Cerny and Robin Propper.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “I think ideally we’d have been looking to get a wee bit more for Glen.

“But he was a kind of classic one who tailed off towards the end. You could tell he was wanting to be playing maybe down in England, that’s where his ambition was lying.

“Of course, it’s like every player that walks out the door you think he should be worth a few bob more.

“But listen, we cannae grumble at the moment, any money that is coming in we should just be thankful for it and try to use it in the right way.

“Try and improve that starting XI. I keep talking about we need five or six.

“At the end of the day it might not be about that quantity, it’s maybe one or two in at the moment of quality that’s going to give us a bit of a lift.”

Rangers profited after Leeds United sold Glen Kamara to Rennes

Including Mohamed Diomande’s loan being made permanent the Light Blues have secured eight incoming deals this summer, yet the squad is currently still weaker than it ended last term.

Injuries to Propper and Oscar Cortes have further tempered the work that has been done, and Clement is struggling to offload players he says were told months ago they were not needed.
