I will not play again: Ranger key player has decided to quit due to…

Rangers have set their asking price at £2million for winger Rabbi Matondo, according to Football Scotland.

Writing on their website [19 August] the outlet reported that the Gers are willing to sell Matondo who has been drawing interest from Leeds United.

The Welshman started the 2-0 win against St Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup on Saturday [17 August] and assisted Cryiel Dessers for the opening goal.

Will Rangers sell Rabbi Matondo?

Philippe Clement wants to sell Matondo before the 30 August deadline [Football Scotland] but was forced to rely on the winger for the match against St Johnstone.

The 23-year-old was a first-team regular last term with six goals and four assists in 31 appearances across all competitions but, now finds himself surplus to requirements at the Light Blues and has been resigned to three substitute cameos before the match on Saturday.

That may very well be his final match for the Gers who despite making an impact, frustrated supporters with his performance [BBC Sportsound], and the potential fee recouped from his sale will provide much-needed investment back into the side.

Unfortunately, it is the situation that Rangers find themselves in, and players need to be sacrificed to improve the squad after the Champions League failure denied the club a £40m windfall [Scottish Daily Mail].

Matondo as 23, still has plenty to offer, but he is destined to play his football away from Rangers and his impact against St Johnstone will impress potential suitors.

The gap between Rangers and Celtic at the Scottish Premiership summit is arguably bigger than ever and players like Matondo are no longer good enough to bridge the gap to their SPFL rivals.

A sale is the most beneficial outcome for all parties and Clement needs to cash in now while the interest in the player remains.
