However, both officials were removed from UEFA’s match information on the day of the match with it emerging later that the pair had been arrested for stealing a stop sign (via The Scottish Sun, 7 August).
And Egan – speaking exclusively to Ibrox News – was left stunned by what had happen
ed.You need to keep a low profile as a referee. There aren’t three teams on the pitch, there are two teams of footballers. The job of referees is to stop and start the game as soon as possible.
“The best referee is the referee that you never notice. Keep your nose clean and let the two teams do the job, this kind of behaviour is ludicrous.”
And hopefully, the pre-match headlines won’t be dominated by any more off-field referee antics before Dynamo Kyiv visit Ibrox on Tuesday 13 August.
