LEXINGTON – Final preparation for the 2024 season is underway in Lexington as Kentucky completed its first week of its 2024 fall camp slate by holding a Fan Day practice on Saturday.

“I like the way practice has started,” UK head coach Mark Stoops said during his Friday media day press conference. “The guys are in very good shape. They worked very hard this off‑season. Credit to our strength and conditioning team with Mark Hill and Corey Edmond and our staff, the players look really good.

“I feel pretty good about this football team. I feel like we have depth and key areas.”

Both Saturday’s Fan Day practice and Friday’s practice were open to the media. Over the two days, NFL scouts from the Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals made appearances.

Friday featured seven media viewing periods, including one 11-on-11 period in which UK’s offense exclusively ran the ball or called play-action pass plays. Saturday was a full-open practice headlined by one-one battles between receiver’s and defensive backs, 7-on-7 periods and 11-on-11 periods.

While the defense was the clear winner of both practices, there were some encouraging signs from the offense, especially on Saturday.

The Cats’ Pause was in attendance for both practices. Here are observations, updates on the department chart standouts, injury concerns, and more from Friday and Saturday’s practices.

Injuries/Absences: During his media day press conference, Stoops announced nose guards Josaih Hayes and Tavion Gadson, defensive end Darrion Henry-Young, and defensive back Jiquavious “Quavo” Marshall will miss extended periods of time, if not the whole season.

He also revealed one notable player would be missing with a ‘soft tissue’ injury. That player appeared to be tight end Josh Kattus, who spoke with the media during Media Day but was not spotted at practice Friday or Saturday. Whether it was Kattus or not, the player with a soft tissue injury is not expected to miss extended time.
