Kris Boyd amazed live on Sky Sports at Tavernier footage in Rangers win v Dundee
Kris Boyd was left amazed at Rangers captain James Tavernier’s free-kick against Dundee that hit the frame of the goal.
Tavernier went close to opening the scoring during the first half of Saturday’s (21 December) Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox, which the Gers went on to win 1-0 thanks to Vaclav Cerny’s goal.
The full-back’s effort from 25 yards hit the crossbar, narrowly denying him what would have been a superb goal.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News [21 December, 3:52pm], Boyd said: “Oh wow, it comes crashing back off the underside of the bar and goes down. What a free-kick that was. It’s very unlucky.”
James Tavernier back on it for Rangers
It was not all that long ago Tavernier looked to be out of the picture at Ibrox and seemingly heading for an exit in 2025.
That may still be the case, of course, but there is now much more of a case to be made that the skipper should be offered a new deal.
Tavernier’s shortfalls are regularly highlighted – namely that he is not the best defender – but he so often papers over the cracks with what he can do in an attacking sense.
This free-kick was an example of that, albeit it the ball did not end in the back of the net, in what would have been another moment to add to Tavernier’s highlights reel.
Rangers were far from their best against Dundee and there are still real concerns about the overall quality of the squad.
It was a case of job done, though, and the Light Blues do at last have some momentum on their side in the Scottish Premiership.
