Breaking news:Philippe Clement sign a resignation letter as he exit Rangers …
Phillipe Clement would be guaranteed to keep his job for the rest of the season if Rangers beat Celtic at Hampden Park on Sunday.
Daily Record columnist Hugh Keevins has revealed that a Rangers shareholder told him that Clement, 50, would avoid the sack if the Belgian was to win his first Old Firm match in the Premier Sports Cup final.
However, the unnamed shareholder apparently believes that would be a bad thing.
“I sat beside a Rangers shareholder at a charity lunch 10 days ago. A lifelong fan and a main of substantial means who was as sensible as they come,” Keevins wrote in the Sunday Mail (page 54, 15 December).
“His considered point of view was that a Rangers win at the national stadium could actually be seen in a negative light.
“Because it would guarantee Clement remaining in office until the end of the season.
“When a Rangers win over Celtic can be seen in anything other than a positive perspective you know Phillipe is a walking contradiction in the eyes of his club’s support.”
Clement doomed at Rangers regardless of Old Firm result
Has Clement lost the support of fans – and shareholders – that much that even an Old Firm win and another trophy won’t help him?
Surely that’s a load of nonsense.
Rangers’ season has been pretty dire so far but Clement isn’t really the main man to blame for all of it as he continues to pick up the pieces left by Michael Beale’s disastrous term as manager.
There are some bright stars emerging at Ibrox thanks to Clement and Nils Koppen and Rangers fans need to give them a chance to get up to speed before wanting heads to roll.
There needs to be a level of realism too. Celtic are miles ahead.
Steven Gerrard got the Gers ahead of them briefly but that was largely helped by a Parkhead implosion towards the end of Neil Lennon’s reign in charge.
Celtic soon bounced back after they made some big changes and you’re deluded if you think Clement should be able to win every single Old Firm game.
