Breaking News: Leeds set to sign new goalkeeper after Man United failed to strike deal…

Leeds United are eyeing a move for Dario Essugo ahead of the January transfer window, according to The Sun on Sunday.

The newspaper reported via their print edition on Sunday (15 December, page 53) that the Whites, who are keeping tabs on different profiles ahead of January, are planning a “daring raid” for the 19-year-old after making an attempt to sign him last summer.

Essugo is currently on loan at Las Palmas from Sporting CP, but the Elland Road outfit are ready to offer a loan-to-buy agreement to lure him to West Yorkshire.

Leeds plot Dario Essugo raid as latest transfer news drops

Primarily a defensive midfielder, Essugo rose through the ranks at Sporting before making his senior debut for them in a Primeira Liga clash with Vitoria de Guimaraes in March 2021, thus becoming their youngest-ever debutant.

Interestingly, Leeds are not short of options in defensive midfield, with Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell and Josuha Guilavogui all at the club.

The 17-year-old had been on trial with the Elland Road club, and it appears that they were impressed with what they saw as they have decided to move forward with a deal.

Leeds United planning for the future

The youngster first caught the eye of British clubs in the summer of 2023 when he impressed in Glory’s pre-season friendly against West Ham at the age of just 15.

Illan Meslier is the Whites’ number one and will be for the foreseeable future unless Daniel Farke decides to move on from the Frenchman.

However, he was slammed for his involvement in the opening goal in the disappointing 1-1 draw with Preston North End on Saturday (14 December).

Meslier should have done better. He got two hands to the ball but could not keep Brad Potts’ 23rd-minute strike out of the net.

The Australian would not be expected to usurp Meslier straight away and will likely play in the under-21 side for now.

It is a promising move for the Whites and the fact that they beat Man United to a deal with make it even sweeter for supporters.

In other Leeds news, Jon Newsone cannot believe that the club has not tied down a star player to a new contract.
