Newcastle United midfielder has contract extended but could leave in January window

An interesting update on this Newcastle United midfielder.

The Mail reporting that their information is that a contract extension has been triggered for Sean Longstaff.

The Newcastle United midfielder now seeing his existing deal extended until 30 June 2026, rather than 30 June 2025.

However, The Mail exclusive adds that Sean Longstaff is also one of the players Newcastle United are willing to sell in January.

Not something which is a great surprise, as I am sure that pretty much any player who isn’t seen as a sure starter if everybody is fit, would be sold if the right offer came in. With the exception of maybe only one or two (not certain starters), plus young players such as Lewis Miley.

As a homegrown player of course, Sean Longstaff has special enhanced PSR benefit if sold for a decent amount.

The year’s extension on Longstaff’s contract obviously gives the club some breathing space if no acceptable offer did come in for the Newcastle United midfielder.

How the Newcastle United contracts situation now looks (via official club releases and media reports), when their current deals end, including this reported Sean Longstaff extension:

End of June 2025:

Dubravka, Schar, Wilson, Lascelles, Krafth, Gillespie, Ruddy, Lewis.

End of June 2026:

Burn, Targett, Pope, Almiron, Longstaff, Ashby, Hayden, Trippier

End of June 2027:

Botman, Jacob Murphy, Willock

End of June 2028:

Tonali, Isak, Barnes, Livramento, Bruno, Miley, Joelinton, Alex Murphy

End of June 2029:

Kelly, Hall, Gordon

Newcastle did brilliantly in their first full season under Saudi Arabia ownership as PIF helped fund a fourth-placed finish under Howe.

In another solid season the Geordies finished seventh last term but their momentum following the takeover has massively stunted this season and there are now rumours they could lose some of their best players in Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.

As former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan put it recently, Newcastle “are caught inside a vacuum, a Bermuda Triangle” because of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
