Shocking News: Leeds United tipped to lose key first team player in January amid wage bill claims – Pundit…
Leeds United look likely to let Joe Gelhardt leave during the January window, but Carlton Palmer believes another first team star could depart.
With just over a month before the January window opens, Leeds and the 49ers are sure to be planning around which transfers the club need to conduct.
Outgoings aren’t going to be the priority, with promotion-chasing Championship clubs not exactly in the position to let many, if any, first team players leave.
Joe Gelhardt looks to be a nailed-on exit with playing time minimal and interest starting to emerge in his signature.
Junior Firpo is one key player in the Leeds squad whose future is up in the air heading into 2025, with his contract up at the end of the season and no agreement imminent.
Concerns over the left-back’s ability to play in the Premier League mean that Leeds may cash in early on the defender in order to ensure they get a fee for him before leaving for nothing in July.
That’s the view of former Leeds man Carlton Palmer, who spoke to Football League World about his future:
“The issue that Leeds United have is Junior Firpo’s contract is up at the end of the season. He’s been outstanding for Leeds United again in the Championship, but he struggled in the Premier League.
“So, on that basis, you wouldn’t have thought that Leeds United would be rushing to offer him a contract. He’s believed to be on really good money, so you wouldn’t see Leeds rushing to offer a new contract.
“Especially, when they’re looking to get back to the Premier League, so the likelihood is perhaps that Junior Firpo will leave the club in the January transfer window,”
Leeds have one of the best left-backs in the league in Firpo, and losing him in January would be a hammer blow to how Farke wants to shape this side.
Of course, getting a fee might represent frugal business from the 49ers as opposed to losing him for nothing, but his impact on the side might help make the difference in promotion – which is worth a lot more than the (for example) £4-6million he might bring us.
If Firpo helps get us promoted and leaves on a free, that’s perhaps the perfect way for him to call time on his career at Elland Road.
