Breaking News:Rangers to pay the cost of past dallying in Morgan Whittaker transfer
Philippe Clement will definitely want to see plenty more transfer business completed at Rangers before the end of the transfer window.
Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Jefte, Hamza Igamane and Liam Kelly have all arrived, while Mohamed Diomande’s transfer has now been made permanent.
So, some good business thus far but there is a clear eye on the future with the deals the Gers have got over the line and the emphasis now will be on proven quality.
There is one deal that if Rangers manage to get over the line that could see them paying the cost for past dallying, though.
It was reported this week by the Daily Record on Friday (19 July) that the Gers have had a bid north of £7million rejected by Plymouth Argyle for forward Morgan Whittaker.
Rangers have been here before with Morgan Whittaker
Apparently, Rangers are pondering a second bid for the 23-year-old who scored 19 goals in 46 Championship outings last season.
But the Pilgrims are not likely to let him go without a fight and manager Wayne Rooney, speaking to Plymouth Live (21 July), said as much.
“I have said this before, Morgan is a fantastic player and I’m really enjoying working with him. We value Morgan very highly. Anything other than a crazy bid, we won’t be entertaining,” Rooney said.
The thing that might frustrate some Rangers supporters is that links to Whittaker are nothing new.
In fact, as far back as January 2023 – when Whittaker had been recalled by then parent club Swansea City after he had impressed on loan with Plymouth in League One – the Gers were linked with a move and submitted an offer to the Welsh club (Fabrizio Romano).
They reportedly tried again 12 months ago to make a deal happen but Wales Online reported that their interest had cooled before Plymouth swooped to complete a deal worth £1million plus add-ons (Tom Coleman).
Here we are some 12 months later and Rangers are once again said to be on the tail of Whittaker. If they do finally manager to get this one over the line, though, there may be some regret that they will pay the cost for their past dallying on this one.
In other Rangers news, one player is now surely finished at Ibrox amid a recent update.
