Derek McInnes wants to take the Rangers job ‘on his own terms’ after previously turning it down while in charge of Aberdeen.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes the 53-year-old still wants the Rangers job should they decide to pull the trigger on the reign of Philippe Clement, 50.

McInnes guided his current club, Kilmarnock, to an impressive 1-0 victory over Glasgow giants at Rugby Park on Sunday (October 20), with Marley Watkins netting the decisive goal in the 87th minute.

Clement’s side are six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen after missing out on the opportunity to close the gap on the top two after their 2-2 draw.

Derek McInnes heavily linked with Rangers job once again

McInnes declined the opportunity to become Rangers manager in 2017 while at Aberdeen, even after holding talks with legendary former boss Walter Smith.

Clement remains under immense pressure following a dismal start to the season, and McInnes, who spent five years at the club in the 90s, has been heavily linked as his potential replacement.

“When he was at Aberdeen he got offered the Rangers job but he said no because he didn’t like the way they were talking,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He had seen this coming, he wanted to bring his own players in, he doesn’t want anyone else, he doesn’t want free transfers.

“A club like Rangers need decent players and they’ve not got that.

“Derek is a proud man, if he’s going to have a go at it he’s going to want to do it on his own terms and that wasn’t on the table so he said no.

“That takes balls to say no because that’s his club, it took a big set of cojones to say no, it must have been hard.”
