Breaking News:Todd Cantwell transfer fee questioned after summer Rangers exit request

Kenny Dalglish has admitted it remains to be seen “if” Rangers can pocket a transfer fee for Todd Cantwell during the summer window.

The English midfielder has submitted a request to leave Ibrox, with Philippe Clement returning to his press conference after the pre-season clash with Birmingham City to reveal this update [Heart and Hand, 24 July].

Cantwell has been linked with a move away from Glasgow for much of the summer transfer window, but Dalglish doesn’t appear to be convinced teams will be queuing up to sign the 26-year-old.

Writing for the Sunday Post (28 July, page 80) he said: “There is also Todd Cantwell. If they can get some sort of transfer fee for Todd it will help the manager fund his own ideas.

“But, for all the negativity, things can change and Rangers need to battle their way through this.

“Philippe has a job to do and he needs to make sure his players are ready for the challenge August will bring.

“The thought of trips to Hearts and Celtic and a Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kiev will seem daunting. They need to be up for it.”

Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers after summer transfer request?

As Dalglish has suggested, there is no guarantee Rangers will be able to find a buyer for Cantwell this summer, let alone pocket a reasonable fee for the midfielder’s services.

The Englishman has never quite managed to hit the heights expected of him in Glasgow, particularly in Old Firm matches where he has previously been slammed for allowing games to pass him by with little impact.

He is a talented player, but it seems unlikely that he will make a step up from the Gers as there won’t be many Premier League or European clubs breaking the bank to win the race for his signature in the coming weeks.
