Sam Lammers decides on Ibrox exit as Rangers transfer talks confirmed in Europe

Rangers outcast Sam Lammers has rejected a move to NEC Nijmegen, according to The Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via its website [21 July] that despite manager Rogier Meijer wanting the Dutch striker this summer, Lammers has decided against leaving Ibrox for the Eredivisie side.

Most expected Lammers to be one of the first players out the exit door following his sensational six-month loan spell with FC Utrecht, but he has chosen to stay put at this moment in time.

Having failed to hit the ground running at Ibrox, scoring twice in 31 appearances, he instead chose a loan spell in the Netherlands for the second half of the season.

He scored 11 goals in 20 appearances, prompting interest from several clubs, with Nijmegen clearly one of the clubs interested in his signature this summer.

A move back to the Netherlands was expected to be the most likely outcome for the 27-year-old, with Utrecht prepared to match the Gers’ £2.7million asking price, as per the Daily Record, but his wage was cited as an issue.

There is still hope for Lammers yet if he decides to stay in Scotland and fight for his spot in the squad, especially with the ongoing concerns around Cyriel Dessers.

With Danilo sidelined for much of last season, the Nigerian forward was Clement’s only real option at striker and continued to disappoint with his all-round play at Ibrox.

Clement was hoping the loan signing of Fabio Silva from Wolves would help alleviate some of the goalscoring pressure on Dessers, and even with over 20 goals in his first season, fans are still not convinced

It is certainly an interesting story to keep an eye on this summer, to see whether Lammers is holding out for a better deal elsewhere or if he is open to the idea of staying at Ibrox and fighting for the club.
