Breaking News:Mateo Joseph shares Leeds United exit stance as Liverpool transfer is mooted
Mateo Joseph has sworn his allegiance to Leeds United after being quizzed over having a soft spot for Liverpool.
The 20-year-old is related to Emile Heskey, who built a reputation as a Liverpool hero during his playing days and is the young striker’s father’s cousin.
In a conversation with AS on Thursday (10 October), Joseph was asked if his uncle had been trying to persuade him to move to Anfield.
“In England, they only support one team and I only support Leeds”, he said.
“Being part of a team and then supporting Liverpool, for example, is not common.”
Mateo Joseph should continue development at Leeds United
It would not be a surprise if Heskey has been trying to persuade Joseph to join Liverpool as he asked him not to win too much at Leeds United to see Leicester City earn promotion last season.
However, it is better for the Spain Under-21 international to continue his development at Elland Road.
Joseph joined the Whites from Espanyol in 2022 and made his senior debut in their 3-2 FA Cup loss to Chelsea in February this year.
He has since seen his playing time steadily increase, clocking 675 minutes in the Championship this season.
With three assists and one goal to his name, Joseph will no doubt be important to Leeds’ promotion hopes.
His form will likely see him attract interest from elsewhere, but better things await him if he puts he continues to be important for Daniel Farke’s side.
If all goes well, Joseph could follow in the footsteps of the likes of Crysencio Summerville, who secured major transfers after shining at Elland Road for a significant amount of time.
