Breaking News:Anthony Joseph on the ‘mutual understanding’ Celtic have with Matt O’Riley,
This summer speculation surrounding Matt O’Riley’s Celtic future has been a tough one for the fans to deal with.
The Denmark international has been one of Celtic’s best players over the last two and a half years and after impressing in the Champions League and Scotland, there has been a queue of clubs linked with interest in the classy midfielder.
Atalanta seems to be the one club who are putting the most effort into capturing the 23-year-old but with interest from Spain and England still being reported, it seems that O’Riley has a lot of options in front of him if he does want to leave Celtic.
So with the number of glamorous clubs showing apparent interest in Celtic’s Player of the Year, it would be easy to assume that O’Riley would want to leave Glasgow for the likes of Madrid or Turin, right?
Not according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.
Matt O’Riley ‘loves’ Celtic and Brendan Rodgers
Not only is O’Riley not ‘pushing to move’ the Celtic hero is ‘very happy’ at the club after Joesph revealed that there is a ‘mutual understanding’ between the two regarding any potential move from Glasgow.
Joseph said [Celtic Unrestricted View podcast], “Matt O’Reilly is not pushing to move. Matt O’Riley is very happy at Celtic. He loves it there, he loves working under Rodgers, he loves the feel of the club.
“He comes across as a guy who’s very humble. I mean he wasn’t out in flashy places on his holidays. He went to a yoga retreat in India for his holidays this summer instead of being at the Euros.
“He’s a very different type of character to what I think you see as the traditional stereotype of footballers.
“He is not someone who is agitating to leave but there is a sort of a mutual understanding there that if a club like Atletico Madrid did in January come in with a bid of that size in the summer they would look at it.
“No one has come in with a bid of that size yet and Celtic have been rejecting the bids so I think that tells you Celtic are not desperate and they’re not going to be a walkover.”
The midfielder was given the honour of captaining the club in the opening game of the US Tour in the 4-0 win over DC United.
In his post-match interview, O’Riley certainly looked happy and relaxed and not like a player who was worried about how his future was going to go.
Even looking at his performances in all three fixtures, O’Riley looked like a player completely focused on the job at hand after this update from Joseph, the Celtic fans will feel that there may be a possibility that he could stay at the club beyond this summer.
