Sunderland supporters get roasted by BBC pundit after celebrating draw with Leeds
A BBC Sport pundit is roasting Sunderland supporters for their reaction after Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier made the costly mistake that led to the Black Cats tying contest in the second half stoppage after he misplayed the ball.
The contest got off to a rocky start for Leeds after Chris Rigg put the home side ahead early with a ninth-minute goal to make it 1-0. However, the Whites quickly responded, as Joël Piroe equalized in the 22nd minute.
Both sides went into halftime tied at 1-1. Junior Firpo gave Leeds the lead again with a goal in the 56th minute, which seemed enough to secure the win. But the game took a dramatic twist in stoppage time. A costly error from Meslier allowed Sunderland to equalize.
Alan Browne’s cross hit Firpo’s head, and as Meslier attempted to gather it, the ball slipped through his fingers and into the net, giving Sunderland a crucial point.
BBC’s Jon Newsome roasted Sunderland supporters after Leeds draw
Leeds United legend Jon Newsome took a jab at Sunderland fans for their song directed at the Whites, highlighting that they were celebrating a home draw as if it were a victory.
“Absolutely [it’s two points dropped], you have to look at the reaction of the supporters, the Sunderland supporters they are all singing stupid ‘Leeds are falling apart,’” Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds.
“You just salvaged; you just nicked what a 2-2 draw at home. You are top of the league by a goal that has gone through our goalkeeper’s legs and you know it is more jam than Hartley’s and yet they feel like they won the game.”
Leeds needs to regroup and come back stronger after the break. They have an important match against promotion rivals Sheffield United at Elland Road on October 18. After recently drawing with Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion and suffering a loss to Burnley, the Whites need to secure a win against a direct rival to boost their confidence.
Moreover, one report reveals that Leeds have no intention of replacing Illan Meslier following his mistake against Sunderland, so expect manager Daniel Farke to give the Frenchman full backing.
